My Plumbing Anxiety

The plumber came Monday morning, but he wasn’t able to do any work because I hadn’t purchased a few items I was supposed to have. Anytime I have to buy something on my own I have a tendency to buy the wrong thing, so I talked through the list with him and figured out what I need. But I still wasn’t sure when I’d get a chance to go shopping.

Then Mike called this morning and said he’d lined up a guy who can install a countertop for us this Saturday, but only if I had the sink ready to go. If I had no sink before Saturday, it would be at least four weeks until he could get here.

With a three day conference just starting up, and no car at my disposal, my options were extremely limited.

Was there a plumbing supply shop near at hand? I tried Stay Local — no luck. Then I tried Google. A search for “plumbing supplies new orleans” turned up a listing for Ken Brown & Sons, only a few blocks from my house, as the top result. I’d never heard of it before. Was it still open, or did it perish in the flood? No answer at the phone number.

So I rode over there on my bicycle, and sure enough, they’re open for business. A few minutes later I had my sink, and a faucet, a couple shower heads and trim, a strainer and a 7″ lavatory bracket.

It was going to be a little tricky getting all that back home on my bicycle, so they brought it by my house, no extra charge. Hooray, and whew.
