I’ve always been under the impression that Lent lasted exactly 40 days.
Looking at the calendar the other day, I noticed the count from Ash Wednesday to Easter was more like 46.
Turns out that Sundays in Lent don’t count. There are exactly 40 non-Sundays in there. Sunday is a celebration of the resurrection, so I guess it doesn’t fit in with the pain and suffering of the Lenten season.
Hmmm. That means an extra week of not drinking. I thought I was signing on for 40 days!

Some people don’t observe Lent on Sundays.
Sundays in Lent are seen as Little Easters. Technically I suppose you could drink on Sundays if that’s the discipline you’ve chosen for the season, but I’m not sure.
I’d heard the same thing – you don’t have to give up drinking (or whatever) on Sundays. How legalistic is that?
However, if you’re already on a roll, it may actually be easier to keep abstaining, if it keeps you out of the drinking habit for the rest of the week. That’s the way I’ve done it in the past (although I don’t give things up for Lent anymore).
