National Library Week is almost over.
I work in a library. To be more precise, I work in a building which houses a library. I don’t actually work for or in the library proper. But I do have to pass through the library to get to my office.
And so I’ve been aware of National Library Week because of the displays that I see in the library lobby. There’s a big gift-wrapped box; I think they are raffling off some prizes.
There’s also a rack of yellow cards marked “Prayer Before an Exam — Take One.” It may seem funny to see such a display in a university library, but this is a Catholic school after all. One of the nuns on the faculty made a wisecrack about the prayer cards yesterday: “God, please bail me out at the last minute.”
Today I took one of the cards. It has a prayer on one side, and there’s a number two pencil taped to the back. The prayer appears to be taken from Prayers That Avail Much for Teens, though there’s no citation so I’m not sure. It’s kind of long — maybe 500 words. I found this passage amusing:
Father, as I enter to take this exam, I ask You to help me. Grant me wisdom and show me how to take the test, so that I gain the most points and make the best grade I can make…
Or how about this:
I will study hard and do my best. Where I come up short, I believe that You can make up the difference.
To be fair, most of the prayer is not like that. Mostly it’s about maintaining one’s confidence, studying effectively, using one’s knowledge, staying calm, working honestly, and so forth. For example, here’s a passage I really like:
Because love casts out all fear, I won’t let fear cloud or block my thinking.
Since I’m not a theist myself, I’m always a little skeptical of prayers. I can only interpret a prayer’s value in terms of the thoughts it might instill in the one who prays, rather than as a communication to a divine being. Supernatural intervention is not the main emphasis here. Instead, it aims to put the student into a good frame of mind, to create a positive attitude. I could imagine that a religious person might actually get some benefit from this meditation.

first of all God, thank you for this wonderful day. thank you that everything together works for my good. Oh God, i ask for your guidance in my upcoming nurse licensure exam on November 29 & 30 2008. I thank you for all the bleesings that you have given me. I thank you God, for making me a registered nurse topnotcher in advance. i thank you God, for removing all the negative thoughts that are surrounding me. Please be with me in these final days of preparation for my Praxis I test that will decide if I have a job or not. I have worked so hard and love my job and the students I teach and coach. I don’t know how to start and I don’t know what exactly to ask for because I humbly admit that I lack preparation for the upcoming CPA board exam. Since I am a person who doesn’t have confidence of myself, I wanted to take it in October for me to be more prepared. But same thing Jesus, I will still be that person who thinks negatively. Amidst the success that I have of being included in the honors of the batch in our graduation, am still not that confident of my capacity.
Lord, I’m planning to take the May board exam in obedience to my parents. I also prepared for the May board exam last semester but I backed out in the middle of the review because I listened to my fears. Now Lord, give me the courage to endure the productive study methods I can use to help me maximize my learning since it is only 1 month to go for the board exam proper. I decided on this 3 weeks after my graduation. I know I’m already behind with the rest of my classmates who have already made up their minds to take on May. But right after consulting Your will through meditations, spiritual direction and charismatic activities, Imade up my mind to take it on MAy for this will test not only my intellectual aspect, but even my attitude on trusting myself and trusting Our Lord.
I’m still not certain if the department will allow me to take the exam since I registered late but I hope and pray that their decision will be the best for me. If it will be approved, then I will really be for May and if not, then you are giving me more time to prepare and improve myself. Lord, I want to enter the next chapter of my life with confidence and may my life be a witness to others. Help me cultivate my prayer time as I study. Let me not give up, Jesus. Let me offer it to You. In your holy name, erase my negative thoughts and please direct me on what topics to study. For days and days that have passed, thank you making me stay under you love that I may be able to conquer my fears and live my dreams anew. Lord God for months I have lingered on the sea of loftiness. Sometimes I might not be the man I used to be, but as moments and moments pass me by, I only realize that I will be needing these days to strengthen up for tomorrow. I have always prayed fight! Kayang-kaya ito! LABAN! To you Oh Lord Jesus Christ I still profess my faith. Continue to guide me in my journey to choose what is right and stray from bad thoughts.
The chains of the luscious universe, I might never escape, but though in may not be in full peril shall I still uphold the virtues you bestowed. I lost some time to become immortal but the gate to such a mission never closed just yet. Lord please help me become more fired up than used to be. I still pray that I may exceed the medals of the past and pursue and succeed the medals of today and tomorrow.
Bless me Oh Lord to be a good learner and mentor from and to my friends, brothers, sister, parents, relatives and aspirations. A long the way Oh God I traversed the pains of hell and turned away from fiery path of unhealed scar. Yet Lord Jesus my heart is tainted with regret of what might have been. Sacred Heart of Jesus I have asked for many favors, but I earnestly implore this one. Take it, place it in Your Sacred Heart. For all the blessings that I have blindly appreciated, thank you and I am sorry God. Thank you Lord for letting me feel your grace each and every second, despite my sins, you are always there to stand and defend by me Lord. Lord I continue to pray that in my new path to take up law, I may find the courage to accept the truth. Pass or fail or highly triumphant. I know that I have under-performed. My mind was perplexed with my failed will to try control my own destiny. Right now I may never have seen the reasons that my mother has prepared before me, but with your grace, God, I follow with faith even if I don’t truly comprehend the reasons and causes of this path I take. I now have an extraordinary duty to live day by day. I know that in the future this too will be worth the hardships.
I know that I have yet to finish the fight with my succubus. The turmoil is so strong that I succumbed from time to time and arise from the lowly pedigrees of sins. I am happy and simultaneously crushed by the demands of the daily life of this path that I have brought before me. Through it all I know that I still continue to walk the path you have designed for Lord. May I continue to live by your faith God. Even I did not know fully this life I live in but to your power God, I entrust my soul and my faith.
