I read Dangerblond’s musings on how to put a man to sleep. (Personally I think the Architectures documentary series sounds fascinating, and I don’t think it would put me to sleep at all.) Anyway, I invited Danger to be on my Netflix friends list. She accepted, and according to Netflix we have a 71% similarity in cinematic taste. That puts her second only to HammHawk (84%) out of the nine friends on my list.
Then I noticed Netflix provides a second method for adding friends, via a link. I’m inclined to regard anyone who bothers to read this as a friend, so I’m putting the link here. If you subscribe to Netflix, you can be my friend just by clicking.
Another friend of mine has expressed skepticism about this whole proposition. She doesn’t want me looking at whatever movies she’s renting. But the appeal for me is not snooping someone’s queue. What I like about the system is that you can see how your friends rated different movies. You can also leave notes about movies, but they’ve fiddled with this system over time, and in my opinion it could use a little more fiddling.
Of course this is just another distraction from the problems we face. The world and our city is going to hell in the proverbial hand basket. Are we are amusing ourselves to death? Or are these distractions necessary to maintain sanity and thus being able to fight the good fight? I don’t know anymore. I just know I like chilling with some good video every now and again.
You can spy on my queue. I don’t care. I recently rejoined anyway so it’s not going to be an extensive list. One thing I was disappointed about was not finding “Mindwalk” starring Liv Ullman, Sam Waterston, and John Heard. It’s kind of in the same genre as “My Dinner with Andre”. I discovered this movie browsing through channels 10 years ago. It was featured in Bravo channel back when they were still worth tuning to.
I’ve toyed with the idea of trying Netflix for a long time. I take it you are satisfied?

Beware Varg. What the review might not say is that it’s a creepy folk-musical, to boot. We had the original in our queue b/c I remembered seeing it at the Prytania when I was little and found it to be a super-frightening film. After watching it earlier this year with me, my husband had to agree that it was “really frightening,” but not in the way I had portrayed it. Oh, the opportunities I give him to mock me. And now I have that groovy song stuck in my head. “And for this man there was a grave, and from this grave there grew a tree…”

B-Rox The City sucks but the flowers are out, the weather is great, and bicycling is lovely this time of year. In the 90’s my neighbor was killed leaving 3 little boys and then my good friend’s husband was killed leaving 3 little boys. Go figure. Just teenagers, one with a lucky shot and one with a carjacking execution style. I am still here. Murder is a bitch. You will make it and the city will make it. Ride your bike and rent a Netflix.
I tend to ascribe it to a localized type of fin de siecle thinking (which I studied in my college Architecture & Culture class along with surrealism). More than merely the end of an era (century or otherwise), it’s the upheaval of the collective psyche that causes a ‘dance until you die’ life celebration. Work hard, play hard.
Sorry I can’t be your friend by these narrow criteria, but my cinematic stays are pretty rigidly cast, so I doubt I’d offer that much up on first glance. Any alt.univ sci.fi (Matrix, Thirteenth Floor), The Gospel of John, Night of the Hunter. Have I put you to sleep?
Distractions are a good thing from time to time, we all know you could use one.
